FAQ about Nogu Svelo!:
Question: Are they popular in Russia?
Short answer: Yes, they are one of the top indie-pop bands in Russia of the last ~22 years.
Long answer: Nogu Svelo! was the most popular alternative/rock band in 1994-1997 over the Ex-USSR territory. 3 years in a row they won Best Alternative band award by the Russia Channel owned Sound Track award.
Their hits Haru Mamburu, Siberian Love, Moscow Romance were everywhere, on all radio stations and TV. The Group have been playing hundreds of gigs per year all over the CIS since then.
Haru Mamburu is almost a soundtrack for russia's crazy, new 1990's, most of the lyrics of Moscow Romance became heavily cited and part of social folklor.
Group had a contracts with the most powerful record lables: Melodia, Rise Music, and Soyuz music.
Albums of year 1995, 1997 were best sellers (unfortunately it’s impossible to say how many copies were sold due to widespread piracy)
Group released 2 very strong albums in 1998, and 2000 that contained a lot of great songs and were pretty popular, but overall it’s possible to say that the pick was already beyond. The main 2 reasons for that is that Russian Radio stations had switched to a very standard and format music, nothing unusual and interrupting had appeared in ether since then (yes, last 16 years russian radio stations force russian musician to produce old type of music) and also a poor management, band producer was fired in 2001.
Group contiuned to release great songs and albums, see fantastic single Benzin in 2001 and album V Temnote in 2002. Revival happened in 2005 when band released very unusual and strong OST to the First Channel's movie Turkish Gambit. If song was offered to radio stations solely they would refuse to put it in top rotation, but since it was affiliated with First channel, they had to be put into rotations, quickly occupying charts on top-1, top-3 positions, resulting in MTV Movie award 2006 for best OST, Golden Grammophone and many other awards. Nogu svelo performed over 1500 gigs in Russia since 1989, having released 10 wonderful albums, giving over 300 interviews and participating in over 400 TV shows, having 25 musical videos.
Question: Do they sing English?
Short Answer: yes. See Lyrics section for details.
Long Answer: Band originally started singing Russian in 1989, but quickly switched to English, German and even fake languages, due to it’s being hard to sing to sing in Russian, phonetics is quite complex, hard to find good rythms, also length of the words. It’s overall easier to sing in English than in Russian. Group continued to massively use English on their albums till 2000 when Box was released. The Box can be called a first album when group finally understood how to put russian texts on their melodies. As you can see it took about 10 years. Max pokrovsky returned to writing English songs in 2011-2015 because he is interested in wordlwide recognition not only russian market. (russian market is dead, you remember, right?)
Question: What style of music do they play?
Short Answer: punk, postpunk, pop-rock, heavy pop, indie, metal, and few dozens more.
Long Answer: they don’t play in particular style of music. Some songs of the band can be considered as: pop, heavy pop, indie-pop, punk, post punk, alternative, metal, chancon, a ⅞ romance and even a waltz. Nogu Svelo is quite a unique band, not similar to any other russian or world wide bands.
Listen to their albums, find something that you like best.
Question: What are their best albums?
Answer: depends on what style do you like. If you like intense sound you would probably like Box, Going East and Fast Food Kids albums.
If you like punk music you can listed to 1-0 Girls, Capricious Mannequeens.
Happy because Pregnant (1-2), V Temnote, Kalli, Siberian Love albums are albums with both beautiful melodies, nice punk style songs and full of hits and potential hits.
Question: Who is Mr Max Pokrovsky?
Answer: Max is a very hardworking person, his ability to do the music whatever happens, search for the best sound, search for opportunities to promote the band alltogether allowed band to become where they are now.
Overall he is very well educated, with good mathematical background, intelligent person. He comes from a good family and is very well mannered person. It’s very often when his sentences are over 20-30 words length.
Overall he is very kind and human person. I would say most people can't see when he is serious about being more human and when he is doing small hooligan stuff.
A dog, 2 kids, wife, moscow aviation institute masters degree and a lot of perfectionism.
